Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 30
Verse 1 of 4

With One Wise, Gentle Soul, the Distance From the One Melts

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਃ ੪ ਦੁਤੁਕੇ ॥
sorath mehlaa 4 dutukay.
Sorat'h, Fourth Mehl, Du-Tukas:
anik janam vichhurhay dukh paa-i-aa manmukh karam karai ahaNkaaree.
Separated from the Lord for countless lifetimes, the self-willed manmukh suffers in pain, engaged in acts of egotism.
ਸਾਧੂ ਪਰਸਤ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
saaDhoo parsat hee parabh paa-i-aa gobid saran tumaaree. ||1||
Beholding the Holy Saint, I found God; O Lord of the Universe, I seek Your Sanctuary. ||1||

In plain words

For so long I felt far away, caught up in “me” and aching from the distance.

Then, in the company of a wise and gentle soul, I found the One — and I rest now in Your shelter.

In the company of one wise, gentle soul, the long-felt distance from the One melts.
The deeper layer

This one says that being near one wise, gentle person can melt the distance from the One. The shabad is written in du-tukay, stanzas of two lines.

The verse speaks of a long, long time of feeling far from the One. The manmukh, someone who follows only their own wants, acts from "me" and aches from being far away. Then comes the turn: saaDhoo parsat hee parabh paa-i-aa. Just by being near a saaDhoo, a holy, gentle person, the One is found.

It is like coming in from the cold and sitting next to a warm fire. You don't have to do much; the warmth reaches you. The main note of this shabad is company. Being close to good people is the door back to the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who is someone whose company makes you feel closer to what matters most?
