You Become Whatever You Soak Into Most

ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਜਨ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਜਾ ਉਰਝਾਇਓ ਮਾਨਨ ਮਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥
raajan meh raajaa urjhaa-i-o maanan meh abhimaanee.
As the king is entangled in kingly affairs, and the egotist in his own egotism,
ਲੋਭਨ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਭੀ ਲੋਭਾਇਓ ਤਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਚੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥੧॥
lobhan meh lobhee lobhaa-i-o ti-o har rang rachay gi-aanee. ||1||
and the greedy man is enticed by greed, so is the spiritually enlightened being absorbed in the Love of the Lord. ||1||

In plain words

A ruler gets wrapped up in ruling. A proud person gets wrapped up in their pride.

A greedy heart is pulled along by greed. Just so, the awakened heart is soaked through with the love of the One.

Whatever you love most, you soak into completely — so the awakened heart soaks into the One.
The deeper layer

This one says: we become soaked in whatever we love most.

Think of a kid lost in a video game. You call their name, and they don't even hear you. Guru Arjan sees that kind of deep focus everywhere. A ruler is wrapped up in ruling. A proud person is wrapped up in pride. A greedy person is pulled along by wanting more.

He does not scold any of them. He just notices how fully each one is caught up in what they love. Then he says the gi-aanee, the awakened one, is caught up the same way in har rang. Rang means color, and it also means love. It is the love of the One, soaking in the way dye soaks into cloth.

So the point is not blame. It is noticing. Deep love can become second nature, just like any habit. The awakened simply point that love at the highest thing of all.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you love so much that you lose track of time doing it?
