Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 55
Verse 3 of 4

Every Good Practice Points at the Same Home

ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਗਿਆਨ ਤਤ ਬੇਤਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਗੋੁਪਾਲਾ ॥
jap tap sanjam gi-aan tat baytaa jis man vasai gopaalaa.
One whose mind is filled with the Lord, is a person of meditation, penance, self-restraint and spiritual wisdom, and a knower of reality.
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਘਾਲਾ ॥੩॥
naam ratan jin gurmukh paa-i-aa taa kee pooran ghaalaa. ||3||
The Gurmukh obtains the jewel of the Naam; his efforts come to perfect fruition. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The one who carries the One in their heart — they already hold everything the careful practices were reaching for.

Whoever, through the teaching, finds the jewel of the Name — their whole effort comes to full, ripe fruit.

Every good practice is pointing at the same home.
The deeper layer

Jap tap sanjam gi-aan tat baytaa jis man vasai gopaalaa — meditation, discipline, self-restraint, deep knowing: the verse says the person with the One living in their heart has arrived at what all those paths point toward. It does not dismiss the practices; it names their destination. Naam ratan, the jewel of the Name, obtained gurmukh (facing the teaching), makes the labor pooran — complete.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you practice that is really about becoming a certain kind of person?
