Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
My Teacher is my guardian and my truest friend.
Again and again He gives me more good than I expected — twice, even four times over — and a steady, growing gladness.
The Guru is both a guard who keeps you safe and your truest friend.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Mayro gur rakhvaaro meet — my Guru is my protector and my friend. Rakhvaaro means one who keeps you safe. Meet means friend. Think of an older cousin at a big fair, who holds your hand in the crowd and also makes you laugh.
Doon cha-oonee day vadi-aa-ee — the Guru gives double, even four times more. Neetaa neet — again and again, day after day. The gift keeps growing. It is more than you ever asked for.
When has a gift turned out to be far bigger than you expected?
