Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 83
Verse 4 of 4

Meeting the King of All Places, the Small Self Melts

ਸਰਬ ਥਾਨ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ॥
sarab thaan ko raajaa.
He is the King of all places.
ਤਹ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਅਗਾਜਾ ॥
tah anhad sabad agaajaa.
There, the unstruck melody of the Shabad resounds.
ਤਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
tis peh ki-aa chaturaa-ee.
Of what use is cleverness when dealing with Him?
ਮਿਲੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੫੧॥
mil naanak aap gavaa-ee. ||4||1||51||
Meeting with Him, O Nanak, one loses his self-conceit. ||4||1||51||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He is the King of every place, and where He is, a music with no instrument is always playing.

No cleverness impresses Him. When you meet Him, the puffed-up feeling of being separate simply melts away.

You cannot outsmart your way to the One; you can only meet Him and let the separateness soften.
The deeper layer

Anhad sabad is the unstruck melody -- a sound not made by any hand. Tis peh ki-aa chaturaa-ee -- cleverness is useless here. Aap gavaa-ee -- meeting the One, the sense of being a separate self is set down.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you try to be clever about that might just need honesty instead?
