Sikhism·Raag Sorath·Shabad 87
Verse 4 of 4

The Name of the Fearless One Brings Lasting Peace

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਾਖੇ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh raakhay.
In His Mercy, God has protected and preserved me.
ਸਭਿ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਦੁਖ ਲਾਥੇ ॥
sabh janam janam dukh laathay.
I am rid of all the pains of countless incarnations.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
nirbha-o naam Dhi-aa-i-aa.
I have meditated on the Naam, the Name of the Fearless Lord;
ਅਟਲ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੫॥
atal sukh naanak paa-i-aa. ||4||5||55||
O Nanak, I have found eternal peace. ||4||5||55||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Held in kindness, I was kept safe, and the aches I had carried a long way lifted.

I kept the Name of the Fearless One in mind, and found a peace that will not move.

Keep company, even in your mind, with what is unafraid -- and courage grows in you.
The deeper layer

Nirbha-o naam -- the Name of the Fearless One; holding what is without fear, fear loosens in you too. Atal sukh -- an unmoving peace, the opposite of the happiness that comes and goes.

A Question to Sit With

What is something brave you could hold in mind the next time you feel scared?
