Verse 4 of 5

Bathing in the Company of the Good, the Coming and Going Ends

ਸੰਤ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਨਾਵੈ ॥
sant sarovar naavai.
One who bathes in the healing pool of the Saints,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
so jan param gat paavai.
that humble being obtains the supreme status.
ਮਰੈ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥
marai na aavai jaa-ee.
He does not die, or come and go in reincarnation;
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੩॥
har har naam Dhi-aa-ee. ||3||
he meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

One who bathes in the company of the good-hearted reaches the highest, steadiest place.

The endless coming and going settles down, because they keep the Name in mind.

A settled heart stops being thrown back and forth by every wave.
The deeper layer

Param gat -- the supreme state. Marai na aavai jaa-ee -- the restless cycle of coming and going stills; not a promise about biology but about a heart that has stopped being tossed back and forth.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel settled instead of pulled in a dozen directions?
