Verse 3 of 5

Only One Taste Truly Satisfies the Thirst

har ras oopar avar ki-aa kahee-ai jin pee-aa so tariptaagaa.
What else can be said to be above the subtle essence of the Lord? One who drinks it in is satisfied and satiated.
maa-i-aa mohit jin ih ras kho-i-aa jaa saakat durmat laagaa. ||3||
One who is lured by Maya loses this juice; that faithless cynic is tied to his evil-mindedness. ||3||

In plain words

Is there anything higher than the taste of the One? Whoever drinks it in is finally, deeply satisfied.

And whoever loses that taste, pulled away by passing glitter, stays restless and hard on themselves — still thirsty.

Only one taste truly satisfies — everything else leaves you a little thirsty.
The deeper layer

Har ras oopar avar kiaa kahee-ai — "what could be said to be above the taste of the One?" Har ras (the essence/taste of the divine) is the shabad's keyword: the one flavor that truly tripta — satisfies. The contrast is the heart maa-i-aa mohit (caught in passing glitter) that loses this taste; the literal's durmat ("evil-mindedness") is softened to "hard on themselves — still thirsty," keeping the picture of restless dissatisfaction without the harsh label. The teaching is one of contentment (very Sorath): only one taste actually fills you; the rest leave you thirsty.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that leaves you wanting more no matter how much you get?
