Verse 4 of 5

The One Is the Life of Your Breath, Even the Praise a Gift

ਮਨ ਕਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਵਨਪਤਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਦੇਉ ਸਮਾਗਾ ॥
man kaa jee-o pavanpat dayhee dayhee meh day-o samaagaa.
The Lord is the life of the mind, the Master of the breath of life; the Divine Lord is contained in the body.
jay too deh ta har ras gaa-ee man tariptai har liv laagaa. ||4||
If You so bless us, Lord, then we sing Your Praises; the mind is satisfied and fulfilled, lovingly attached to the Lord. ||4||

In plain words

The One is the very life of your mind, the master of every breath, living right inside this body.

If You give me the gift, I'll sing Your praise — and my mind, at last, is full and content, lovingly turned toward You.

The One is the very life of your breath — and even the wish to praise is a gift you're given.
The deeper layer

A tender pauri of immanence and dependence. Man kaa jee-o pavanpat dayhee — "the life of the mind, master of the breath, in the body." The One is not far off but the very aliveness of your breathing. And the honest note: jay too deh — "if You give it" — even the singing of praise is a gift received, not a feat achieved (grace as always-given, per the project). The result is man triptai — the mind satisfied and har liv laagaa, lovingly attached. This is the satisfied contentment the whole shabad has been pointing toward.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you have that you didn't earn but were simply given?
