In the Shelter, Peace Is Found

jis dayvai purakh biDhaataa.
One who is blessed by the Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny,
har ras tin hee jaataa.
realizes the subtle essence of the Lord.
jamkankar nayrh na aa-i-aa.
The Messenger of Death does not come near him.
sukh naanak sarnee paa-i-aa. ||4||9||59||
In the Lord's Sanctuary, Nanak has found peace. ||4||9||59||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The heart the Maker of destiny blesses comes to taste the sweetness of the One.

No dread can come near it, and in the One's shelter, it rests in peace.

A sheltered heart is one that dread cannot easily reach.
The deeper layer

Purakh bidhaataa -- the Maker, the Architect. Har ras tin hee jaataa -- only one so blessed truly knows the ras, the taste. The old messenger-of-death image is softened: dread simply cannot approach a sheltered heart.

A Question to Sit With

What is a shelter -- a person, a place, a practice -- where dread cannot follow you?
