The One Who Gives Back What Was Lost

sorath mehlaa 5.
Sorat'h, Fifth Mehl:
ga-ee bahorh bandee chhorh nirankaar dukh-daaree.
The Restorer of what was taken away, the Liberator from captivity; the Formless Lord, the Destroyer of pain.
karam na jaanaa Dharam na jaanaa lobhee maa-i-aaDhaaree.
I do not know about karma and good deeds; I do not know about Dharma and righteous living. I am so greedy, chasing after Maya.
naam pari-o bhagat govind kaa ih raakho paij tumaaree. ||1||
I go by the name of God's devotee; please, save this honor of Yours. ||1||

In plain words

You give back what was lost and set free whatever felt trapped; You are formless, and You carry away pain.

I do not have much to show -- I get pulled this way and that by wanting. But I am called one who loves You, so please keep that name safe.

You do not have to arrive full-handed; you can come as you are and ask to be held.
The deeper layer

Ga-ee bahorh, bandee chhorh -- Restorer of the lost, Freer of the captive; nirankaar, the Formless. The speaker admits emptiness (little knowledge of ritual, easily pulled by maya) and simply asks the One to honor the bond between them.

A Question to Sit With

What would you say if you came to the deepest place with completely empty hands?
