Maghar — The Unchanging One in a Changing World

manghar maahu bhalaa har gun ank samaav-ay.
The month of Maghar is good, for those who sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and merge in His Being.
gunvantee gun ravai mai pir nihchal bhaav-ay.
The virtuous wife utters His Glorious Praises; my Beloved Husband Lord is Eternal and Unchanging.
nihchal chatur sujaan biDhaataa chanchal jagat sabaa-i-aa.
The Primal Lord is Unmoving and Unchanging, Clever and Wise; all the world is fickle.
gi-aan Dhi-aan gun ank samaanay parabh bhaanay taa bhaa-i-aa.
By virtue of spiritual wisdom and meditation, she merges in His Being; she is pleasing to God, and He is pleasing to her.
geet naad kavit kavay sun raam naam dukh bhaagai.
I have heard the songs and the music, and the poems of the poets; but only the Name of the Lord takes away my pain.
naanak saa Dhan naah pi-aaree abh bhagtee pir aagai. ||13||
O Nanak, that soul-bride is pleasing to her Husband Lord, who performs loving devotional worship before her Beloved. ||13||

In plain words

Maghar is good for the heart that sings about all that is good in the One and rests close to that goodness.

A heart full of virtue keeps singing those praises, and it loves the Beloved who never changes and never wavers.

The One is steady, wise, and always the same, while the whole rushing world keeps shifting and spinning.

Through understanding and quiet meditation, my heart merges in the One; I delight in the Beloved, and the Beloved delights in me.

I have heard songs and music and the poems of poets, and only the Name of the One takes my pain away.

Nanak says: the Beloved loves the heart that offers loving devotion.

In a world that never stops changing, the heart can rest on the One that never does.
The deeper layer

Maghar (November-December) brings early-winter calm: the nihchal One — unmoving, changeless, wise — beside the chanchal world that keeps shifting and spinning. After the monsoon's turbulence this is a still point. Gi-aan and dhi-aan (understanding and meditation) are the way the heart merges into that goodness. Songs and poems delight, and the Naam alone takes the pain away; ab bhagtee is devotion offered from deep within.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing in your life that stays steady no matter how much else changes?
