In plain words

A heart full of good qualities gets to be close to the One it loves.

And here's the hopeful part: anyone can grow those good qualities — the closeness is open to everyone who does.

What draws you close to the One isn't luck or looks — it's the goodness you grow inside, and anyone can grow it.
The deeper layer

Being close to the One is not about luck or looks. It is about the goodness we grow inside.

Raag Wadahans often uses a picture called the soul-bride. Every soul is like a bride who longs to be close to her beloved, the One. Guru Nanak begins with two brides. Gunvantee saho raavi-aa: the bride full of good qualities is close to her Beloved. Nirgun kookay kaa-ay: so why does the one without them cry out?

Then comes the hopeful part. Jay gunvantee thee rahai: if she grows those good qualities too, she will also be close. The door is never shut. It is like a school club that is open to anyone who shows up and practices. The difference is not favorites. It is goodness, and anyone can grow it.

A Question to Sit With

What good quality would you most like to grow more of in yourself?
