A Simple 'I Trust You' Steadies a Whole Heart

I seek Your Protection, O Perfect Lord, Sustainer of the World. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind to me, gentle One; I rest in Your care, maker and holder of the whole world.

A simple 'please be kind to me, I trust You' can steady a whole heart.
The deeper layer

Sometimes a simple "I trust You" is all a heart needs to feel steady.

This is the rahao line, the "pause," the center of the shabad. Kar kirpaa prabh deen da-i-aalaa: be kind to me, God, You who are gentle with the humble. Tayree ot pooran gopaalaa: I lean on You, perfect One who cares for the whole world.

Ot means a shelter, something to lean against. Think of a small child in a crowd who reaches up and holds a parent's hand. Nothing else needs to be said. This simple, trusting request runs through all of Guru Arjan's prayers in this raag.

A Question to Sit With

When do you feel safest asking someone to look after you?
