Verse 3 of 5

The Good You Long For Isn't Far Away

ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥
jal thal mahee-al rahi-aa bharpooray.
He is totally pervading and permeating the water, the land and the sky.
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੂਰੇ ॥੨॥
nikat vasai naahee parabh dooray. ||2||
God is near at hand, not far away. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One fills the water and the land and the sky — everywhere you could look.

And it's near at hand, not far away at all.

The good you long for isn't far away in some distant place — it's near, all around you and inside you.
The deeper layer

The good you long for is not far away. It is right here.

Jal thal mahee-al rahi-aa bharpooray: the One fills the water, the land, and the sky. Nikat vasai naahee prabh dooray: the One lives close by, not far away. Gurbani gives this comfort again and again.

Raag Wadahans is full of longing for a Beloved who seems far off. This line gently corrects that feeling. Think of looking all over the house for your glasses, when they are on your head the whole time. The One you ache for is not in some distant place. It is near, all around you, and inside you.

A Question to Sit With

Where might something wonderful be hiding, closer to you than you usually notice?
