Ask, Sing, and Peace Comes

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

Show mercy unto me, that I may sing Your Glorious Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੪॥੫॥
naanak naam japat sukh paavaa. ||4||5||
O Nanak, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I obtain peace. ||4||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Be kind to me, so I can sing about what's good —

and keeping that Name in mind, I find real peace.

Ask for a little help, sing about what's good, and peace comes.
The deeper layer

Ask for a little help, sing about what is good, and peace comes.

Kar kirpaa tayray gun gaavaa: be kind to me, so I can sing of Your goodness. Naanak naam japat sukh paavaa: says Nanak, remembering the Name, I find peace. The Name is the living presence of the One.

These short prayers by Guru Arjan follow a simple path. First we ask for grace. Then we give praise. Then peace comes. Think of a family that says thank you before dinner. They ask, they give thanks, and the whole meal feels warmer.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing could you 'sing about' to help peace settle in?
