Verse 3 of 5

When in Over Your Head, Reach Up for a Hand

ਤੇਰੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੂ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਸਾਥੀ ॥
tayray jee-a too sad hee saathee.
All beings are Yours; You are their constant companion.
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਤੇ ਕਢੁ ਦੇ ਹਾਥੀ ॥੨॥
sansaar saagar tay kadh day haathee. ||2||
Please, give me Your hand, and pull me up out of this world-ocean. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone belongs to You, and You stay by our side always.

So please give me Your hand and lift me up out of the deep water.

When you feel in over your head, you can reach up and ask for a hand — trusting it will come.
The deeper layer

The heart of the shabad, and one of the raag's tenderest images: "all beings are Yours; You are their constant companion. Please give me Your hand, and pull me up out of the world-ocean." The plea for a rescuing hand (as in Bihaagraa Shabad 13/1153) — total trust that the One will reach down and lift. For a child: when you feel like you're in over your head, you can reach up and ask for a hand, trusting it will come.

A Question to Sit With

Who reaches out a hand to help you when you feel like you're struggling?
