Dressing Up Doesn't Fill the Space Inside

I have adorned myself with all sorts of decorations, O my friend, but without my Husband Lord, they are of no use at all.
When my Husband does not care for me, O my friend, then my youth passes, totally useless.
Dhan Dhan tay sohaaganee ammaalee jin saho rahi-aa samaa-ay.
Blessed, blessed are the happy soul-brides, O my friend, who are blended with their Husband Lord.
I am a sacrifice to those happy soul-brides; I wash their feet again and again. ||4||

In plain words

I dressed up in every way, but without real closeness none of it means much.

Trying to be noticed from the outside just doesn't fill the space inside.

I look up to the hearts that have found true closeness, and would gladly learn from them.

Dressing up and trying to be noticed doesn't fill the space inside — there's a truer way, learned from those who've found it.
The deeper layer

The raag's steady teaching once more: "I have adorned myself with all sorts of decorations... but without my Beloved they are of no use." Decoration doesn't win love; outer effort to be noticed can't fill the inner space. And the humble turn — "I bow to those who have found it; I wash their feet" — gladly learning from those further along. For a child: dressing up and trying to be noticed doesn't fill the space inside; there's a truer way, and you can learn it from those who've found it.

A Question to Sit With

What's a truer way to feel close to someone than just trying to be noticed?
