In plain words

As long as I saw everything as 'me and not-me,' the One felt far away.

But when I met real wisdom, my longing was answered and my hopes came true.

I found a deep contentment — and saw the One was here all along, everywhere.

Now my heart rests in that love, so grateful to the wisdom that led me home.

What makes good feel far away is the 'me-and-not-me' feeling and doubt — when those soften, you see it was near all along.
The deeper layer

The shabad resolves — and its resolution is the raag's core teaching: "as long as I suffered from duality and doubt, I thought God was far away. But when I met the True Guru, all my hopes were fulfilled." The distance was never real; it was the me-vs-them split and doubt that made the One seem far. Once that melted, "my Husband Lord is all-pervading everywhere" — here all along. The colophon (||5||1||9||) closes this Second-House shabad and the Mehl 5 shabad run. For a child: what made the good feel far away was the 'me and not-me' feeling and doubt — and when those softened, you see it was near the whole time.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt far from someone, then realized the distance was mostly in how you were seeing it?
