Sikhism·Raag Wadahans·Shabad 24
Verse 3 of 9

When Word, Thought, and Deed Line Up, You Become Real

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚੀ ਸਚਿ ਰਤੀ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
jihvaa sachee sach ratee tan man sachaa ho-ay.
True is the tongue which is imbued with Truth, and true are the mind and body.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਜਾਸਹਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਭੁ ਖੋਇ ॥੨॥
bin saachay hor salaahnaa jaaseh janam sabh kho-ay. ||2||
By praising any other than the True Lord, one's whole life is wasted. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A tongue soaked in truth is true, and so are the heart and body that go with it.

Spending your whole life praising things that don't last leaves you empty.

When your words, thoughts, and actions all line up with what's true, your whole self becomes solid and real.
The deeper layer

"True is the tongue imbued with Truth, and true are the mind and body." When truth soaks all the way through — words, thoughts, actions aligned — the whole person becomes true, with no gap between inside and outside. And the warning: pouring your life into praising fleeting things (koorh, the unreal) "wastes" it. For a child: when your words, thoughts, and actions all line up with what's true, your whole self becomes solid and real.

A Question to Sit With

Does it feel different inside when what you say, think, and do all match up?
