Living Truly Brings You Home, and That's a Gift

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਮਿਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
naanak sachai maylay taa milay aapay la-ay milaa-ay.
O Nanak, one merges with the True Lord, when He merges with Himself.
ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਰਖਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੮॥੧॥
ji-o bhaavai ti-o rakhsee aapay karay rajaa-ay. ||8||1||
As it pleases Him, He preserves us; He Himself ordains His Will. ||8||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart of truth blends into the One — and even that blending is the One's own gift.

It holds us the way it wishes; its gentle will is behind it all.

Living truly brings you home to what's real — and even that homecoming is a gift you're given.
The deeper layer

The Ashtapadee closes: "one merges with the True Lord, when He merges with Himself" — even the final union is the One's doing, not our achievement. "As it pleases Him, He preserves us; He Himself ordains His Will." The colophon (||8||1||) closes the hymn. The whole arc: a life made of truth comes home to the True One — and the coming-home is itself a grace. For a child: living truly brings you home to what's real — and that homecoming is a gift.

A Question to Sit With

What's one true, honest thing you could do today?
