The sensory organs are totally engrossed in sensuality; sexual desire and anger constantly afflict him. ||1||

In plain words

When the mind scatters in every direction, it's hard to sing about anything good.

The senses get pulled every which way, and big feelings keep tugging at us.

When your mind scatters in every direction, it's hard to focus on anything good — and that's a common feeling.
The deeper layer

Guru Amar Das opens with the honest problem: "his mind wanders in the ten directions — how can he sing the Praises?" A scattered, pulled-in-every-direction mind, tugged by the senses and by strong feelings ("sexual desire and anger"), can't settle enough to sing. The qMonk voice renders this as the familiar experience of a distracted, tugged-about mind — a state, not a condemnation. The hymn will offer the way to gather it.

A Question to Sit With

What pulls your mind in a hundred directions, and what helps you gather it back?
