Even Your Best Words Are Partly a Gift

taa mai kahi-aa kahan jaa tujhai kahaa-i-aa.
When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak.
amrit har kaa naam mayrai man bhaa-i-aa.
The Ambrosial Name of the Lord is pleasing to my mind.
naam meethaa maneh laagaa dookh dayraa dhaahi-aa.
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, seems so sweet to my mind; it has destroyed the dwelling of pain.
sookh man meh aa-ay vasi-aa jaam tai furmaa-i-aa.
Peace came to dwell in my mind, when You gave the Order.
nadar tuDh ardaas mayree jinn aap upaa-i-aa.
It is Yours to bestow Your Grace, and it is mine to speak this prayer; You created Yourself.

When I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak. ||2||

In plain words

Whatever good I've managed to say, it came through me as a gift, not just from me.

The beautiful Name is sweet to my heart and has chased away the ache of pain.

Peace came to live in me — a gift I can be grateful for.

Even your best words are partly a gift — and peace is something to be thankful for, not just proud of.
The deeper layer

A verse of deep humility: "when I have spoken, I spoke as You made me speak." Even our good words are, in a sense, given through us. The Name "seems so sweet" and "has destroyed the dwelling of pain" — remembrance evicting hurt and settling peace in its place. "It is Yours to bestow Grace, and mine to speak this prayer" — a lovely division of labor: grace gives, we ask. For a child: even your best words are partly a gift, and peace is something you can be thankful for, not just proud of.

A Question to Sit With

When something good comes out of you, does it feel like it's only from you, or partly a gift?
