Sikhism·Raag Wadahans·Shabad 45
Verse 3 of 8

Things Change, but the Good Stays

ਆਵਾ ਗਵਣੁ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਤੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੋ ॥
aavaa gavan sirji-aa too thir karnaihaaro.
You created comings and goings, but You are ever-stable, O Creator Lord.
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਬਧਿਕੁ ਜੀਉ ਬਿਕਾਰੋ ॥
jaman marnaa aa-ay ga-i-aa baDhik jee-o bikaaro.
In birth and death, in coming and going, this soul is held in bondage by corruption.
ਭੂਡੜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬੂਡੜੈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਾਰੋ ॥
bhoodrhai naam visaari-aa boodrhai ki-aa tis chaaro.
The evil person has forgotten the Naam; he has drowned - what can he do now?
ਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਦਿਆ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਕਾ ਵਣਜਾਰੋ ॥੩॥
gun chhod bikh ladi-aa avgun kaa vanjaaro. ||3||
Forsaking merit, he has loaded the poisonous cargo of demerits; he is a trader of sins. ||3||

In plain words

You made the coming and going of things, but You Yourself stay steady and unchanging.

When we forget the good, we can feel tossed about and lost.

It's like setting down the good and loading up a heavy cart of not-so-good choices instead.

Things keep changing, but the good stays steady — and any heavy load we're carrying can be set down.
The deeper layer

Everything around us keeps changing. The One stays steady.

Aavaa gavan sirji-aa: You made the coming and going of things. Too thir karnaihaaro: but You, Creator, stay steady. Seasons change, friends move, we grow taller. Under all of it, the One does not change.

The verse says that when we forget the good, we get tied up and tossed about. The Guru uses the picture of someone sinking in deep water. He also uses the picture of a trader. Gun chhod bikh ladi-aa: he left the good behind and loaded up a cart of poison instead.

Think of a backpack stuffed with rocks while the snacks and water got left at home. It only gets heavier. The hope running through these mourning songs is that such a load can be set down. We can turn back toward the steady One at any time.

A Question to Sit With

What's a heavy feeling you'd like to set down, and who could help you?
