He judges things to be good, only as long as the Lord gives and he receives. ||2||

In plain words

Words spoken without real love ring a little hollow.

Loving the good only when it gives us what we want isn't the deepest kind of love.

Loving the good only when it gives us what we want isn't the deepest kind of love — real love stays anyway.
The deeper layer

A short, honest Shalok of Guru Nanak: "false is the speech of one who acts without loving the Lord. He judges things good only as long as the Lord gives and he receives." A gentle challenge to fair-weather love — loving the good only when it pays off. Real love isn't conditional on getting. For a child: loving the good only when it gives us what we want isn't the deepest kind of love — real love stays even when we don't get our way.

A Question to Sit With

Is it easy to be good only when things go your way? What about when they don't?
