Holding the True Inside Carries You Across

ਸਤਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
satgur sayvaa tay nistaaraa gurmukh tarai sansaaraa.
Serving the True Guru, one is emancipated; the Gurmukh crosses over the world-ocean.
ਸਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰਾ ॥੪॥
saachai naa-ay ratay bairaagee paa-in mokh du-aaraa. ||4||
The detached renunciates are imbued with the True Name; they attain the gate of salvation. ||4||

In plain words

Learning from what's wise, a person crosses over the rough waters of life.

Even those who step back from the world's rush find real freedom by holding what's true.

Whatever your path, it's holding onto what's true inside that carries you across.
The deeper layer

"Serving the True Guru, one is emancipated; the Gurmukh crosses over the world-ocean." And notably, "the detached renunciates are imbued with the True Name; they attain the gate of salvation" — Guru Amar Das honors the sincere renunciate too, so long as they hold the Name. The raag keeps insisting: the path is inner (the Name), whether one is householder or renunciate.

A Question to Sit With

What's a true thing you can 'hold onto' when life feels like rough water?
