In plain words

A person turned toward the One practices real self-discipline and finds the heart of wisdom.

They keep the true One in mind.

Real self-discipline is a gentle, steady turning of the heart toward good — not harsh punishment.
The deeper layer

Real self-control is gentle and steady, not harsh.

This short shabad praises the gurmukh. A gurmukh is a person whose face is turned toward the Guru, toward the One. Gurmukh sach sanjam: such a person practices true sanjam, self-control. Tat gi-aan: and finds the heart of wisdom.

The self-control here is not about being hard on yourself. It works from the inside. Think of a good goalkeeper. They do not flail around. They stay calm, watch the ball, and keep steady.

Gurmukh saachay lagai dhi-aan: the gurmukh keeps the True One in mind. That quiet focus is the real discipline.

A Question to Sit With

What's a gentle habit that helps you stay steady and kind?
