Verse 3 of 5

Rest on the Good and the Chasing Stops

ਅਖੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
akhee santokhee-aa ayk liv laa-ay.
My eyes are content, lovingly focused on the One Lord.
ਮਨੁ ਸੰਤੋਖਿਆ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਗਵਾਇ ॥੨॥
man santokhi-aa doojaa bhaa-o gavaa-ay. ||2||
My mind is content, having forsaken the love of duality. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My eyes are content, resting on what's good instead of always hunting for more.

My mind is content, having let go of the me-versus-them way of seeing.

Your eyes and mind feel peaceful when they rest on what's good, instead of always chasing the next thing.
The deeper layer

Eyes and a mind that rest on the good stop chasing the next thing.

Akhee santokhee-aa: my eyes are content. Ayk liv laa-ay: they rest lovingly on the One. The senses keep finding their peace, one by one.

Think of scrolling a video feed. Your eyes keep hunting for the next thing and never feel full. Now think of watching a sunset with someone you love. Your eyes just rest.

Man santokhi-aa: my mind is content too. Doojaa bhaa-o gavaa-ay: it has let go of doojaa bhaa-o, the "two-ness," the habit of seeing everything as me against them. When the eyes and mind rest on the good, the restless chasing quiets down.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to really rest your eyes on something good instead of always wanting more?
