The Stillness Everywhere

The absolute Lord is deep within; the absolute Lord is outside us as well. The absolute Lord totally fills the three worlds.

One who knows the Lord in the fourth state, is not subject to virtue or vice.

One who knows the mystery of God the Absolute, who pervades each and every heart, knows the Primal Being, the Immaculate Divine Lord.

That humble being who is imbued with the Immaculate Naam,

O Nanak, is himself the Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny. ||51||

In plain words

The still, absolute One is deep within you, and outside you too; it fills the three worlds completely.

Whoever knows the One in the fourth state (beyond waking, dreaming and deep sleep) is no longer held by good deeds or bad.

Whoever knows the secret of the still One who fills every heart knows the First Being, the spotless Lord.

The person dyed in the spotless Naam,

Nanak says, is that same First Being, the Maker of destiny.

The same deep stillness is inside you and inside everything.
The deeper layer

The same deep stillness of the One is inside you, outside you, and everywhere.

Sunn means the still, absolute One, before and beyond all form; it fills inside, outside and the three worlds. The chauthaa sunn, the fourth state, lies past waking, dreaming and deep sleep, where the scorekeeping of virtue and vice falls quiet. The last line is bold: the one dyed in the Naam is so-ee purakh bidhaataa, one with the Maker, like a wave that knows itself as ocean.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt a stillness that seemed to be everywhere at once?
