Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 53 of 74

Where Does the Stillness Come From?

sunno sunn kahai sabh ko-ee.
"Everyone speaks of the Absolute Lord, the unmanifest void.
anhat sunn kahaa tay ho-ee.
How can one find this absolute void?
anhat sunn ratay say kaisay.
Who are they, who are attuned to this absolute void?"
jis tay upjay tis hee jaisay.
They are like the Lord, from whom they originated.
o-ay janam na mareh na aavahi jaahi.
They are not born, they do not die; they do not come and go.
naanak gurmukh man samjhaahi. ||52||
O Nanak, the Gurmukhs instruct their minds. ||52||

In plain words

"Everyone talks about the absolute stillness.

How is that unstruck stillness found?

Who are the people tuned to it?"

They are like the One they came from.

They are not born and do not die; they do not come and go.

Nanak says: facing the Guru, they teach their own minds.

We become like whatever we soak ourselves in.
The deeper layer

Those tuned to the One become like the One they came from.

The Siddhas ask about sunn, the still void, and who lives in it. Jis tay upjay tis hee jaisay: they become like their source, the way water poured back into the sea is sea. Beyond birth and death here means beyond the restless round of coming and going; the mind has come home.

A Question to Sit With

What are you soaking yourself in these days?
