Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 55 of 74

Awake, Not Asleep

sahj bhaa-ay milee-ai sukh hovai.
Meeting with the Lord through intuition and love, peace is found.
gurmukh jaagai need na sovai.
The Gurmukh remains awake and aware; he does not fall sleep.
sunn sabad aprampar Dhaarai.
He enshrines the unlimited, absolute Shabad deep within.
kahtay mukat sabad nistaarai.
Chanting the Shabad, he is liberated, and saves others as well.
gur kee deekhi-aa say sach raatay.
Those who practice the Guru's Teachings are attuned to the Truth.
naanak aap gavaa-ay milan nahee bharaatay. ||54||
O Nanak, those who eradicate their self-conceit meet with the Lord; they do not remain separated by doubt. ||54||

In plain words

Meeting the One with ease and love, peace comes.

The one who faces the Guru stays awake and does not drift into sleep.

They keep the boundless Word of the still One deep inside.

Speaking the Word, they are freed, and they carry others across too.

Those who follow the Guru's teaching are dyed in Truth.

Nanak says: those who lose their small self meet the One, and doubt no longer keeps them apart.

Staying awake inside means not sleepwalking through your own life.
The deeper layer

Stay awake inside, let the small self go, and nothing stands between you and the One.

Gurmukh jaagai, staying awake, means not sleepwalking through life. Aap gavaa-ay, losing self-conceit, opens the meeting. Bhraat, doubt, is the sense of being separate; once the small self goes, it has nothing to stand on.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your day do you go on autopilot?
