Sikhism·Sidh Gosht·Shabad 112
Verse 56 of 74

Where Do Harmful Thoughts Go?

kubuDh chavaavai so kit thaa-ay.
"Where is that place, where evil thoughts are destroyed?
ki-o tat na boojhai chotaa khaa-ay.
The mortal does not understand the essence of reality; why must he suffer in pain?"
jam dar baaDhay ko-ay na raakhai.
No one can save one who is tied up at Death's door.
bin sabdai naahee pat saakhai.
Without the Shabad, no one has any credit or honor.
ki-o kar boojhai paavai paar.
"How can one obtain understanding and cross over?"
naanak manmukh na bujhai gavaar. ||55||
O Nanak, the foolish self-willed manmukh does not understand. ||55||

In plain words

"Where is the place where harmful thoughts end?

Why do people miss the heart of things and keep getting hurt?"

Tied up at death's door, no one can save you.

Without the Word, you have no honor and no standing.

"How can a person understand and cross over?"

Nanak says: the foolish mind that follows only itself does not understand.

Harmful thoughts do not vanish by force; they dissolve in a clearer light.
The deeper layer

Without the Word, harmful thoughts keep tripping you up, and no one else can untie you.

Kubudh, harmful thinking, is the bad advice the mind gives itself. Chotaa khaa-ay, taking blows, is what happens when we miss the tat, the heart of things. Being tied at death's door is a stark picture of a life caught by its own habits. The answer, the Word, comes in the next verse.

A Question to Sit With

Where do your worries finally quiet down?
