Savaiye in Praise of Guru Amar Das, Verse 8 — the Naam is his bath and his food

naam naavan naam ras khaan ar bhojan naam ras sadaa chaa-y mukh mist banee.
The Naam is His cleansing bath; the Naam is the food He eats; the Naam is the taste He enjoys. With deep yearning, He chants the Sweet Bani of the Guru's Word forever.
Dhan satgur sayvi-o jis pasaa-ay gat agam jaanee.
Blessed is service to the True Guru; by His Grace, the State of the Unfathomable Lord is known.
kul sambooh samuDhray paa-ya-o naam nivaas.
All Your generations are totally saved; You dwell in the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
sakyath janam kal-yuchrai gur paras-yi-o amar pargaas. ||8||
So speaks KALL: fruitful is the life of one who meets with Guru Amar Daas, radiant with the Light of God. ||8||

In plain words

The Naam is his bath. The Naam is the taste he enjoys and the food he eats. With deep longing he always speaks the sweet Bani, the Guru's Word.

Blessed is serving the True Guru. By his grace, the way of the Unreachable One is known.

All your generations are carried across. You live in the Naam.

Kal says: fruitful is the life of whoever meets Guru Amar Das, shining with light.

Fruitful is the life that meets the Guru.
The deeper layer

The Naam is Guru Amar Das's bath and his food, and meeting him makes a life bear fruit.

Naam naavan naam ras khaan: the Naam is his bath and the taste he enjoys. He speaks the sweet Bani with deep longing. Kul sambooh samuDhray: all his generations are carried across, the whole family line.

Amar pargaas can be heard two ways at once: the light of Amar Das, and a light that never dies. The bard is Kal.
