Savaiye in Praise of Guru Nanak, Verse 6 — the One without hate lives in his heart

raaj jog maani-o basi-o nirvair ridantar.
He mastered Raja Yoga, and enjoys sovereignty over both worlds; the Lord, beyond hate and revenge, is enshrined within His Heart.
sarisat sagal uDhree naam lay tari-o nirantar.
The whole world is saved, and carried across, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
gun gaavahi sankaad aad jankaad jugah lag.
Sanak and Janak and the others sing His Praises, age after age.
Dhan Dhan gur Dhan janam sakyath bhalou jag.
Blessed, blessed, blessed and fruitful is the sublime birth of the Guru into the world.
paataal puree jaikaar Dhun kab jan kal vakhaani-o.
Even in the nether regions, His Victory is celebrated; so says KAL the poet.
har naam rasik naanak gur raaj jog tai maani-o. ||6||
You are blessed with the Nectar of the Lord's Name, O Guru Nanak; You have mastered Raja Yoga, and enjoy sovereignty over both worlds. ||6||

In plain words

He enjoys raaj jog, ruling in both worlds, and the One who holds no hate lives inside his heart.

The whole world is lifted up and carried across by taking the Naam.

Sanak and Janak and the others sing his praises, age after age.

Blessed, blessed is the Guru, and blessed and fruitful is his birth into the world.

Kal the poet says: even in the worlds down below, his victory is cheered.

O Guru Nanak, you delight in the sweetness of the Naam of the One. You enjoy raaj jog — ruling in the world and joined with the One.

The One who holds no hate lives in the Guru's heart.
The deeper layer

The One who holds no hate, nirvair, lives in Guru Nanak's heart, and through the Naam the whole world is carried across.

Nirvair, without hate, is also one of the words of the Mool Mantar, the opening of the Guru Granth Sahib. Sarisat sagal uDhree: the whole creation is lifted up. Paataal puree jaikaar Dhun: even the worlds below ring with cheers of victory. The praise reaches every level of creation, from top to bottom.

The verse ends by speaking straight to the Guru: har naam rasik naanak gur, Guru Nanak, lover of the sweetness of the Naam. The bard is Kal.

A Question to Sit With

How does it feel to let go of holding something against someone?
