gun gaa-ay parabh tumH bay-ant. ||1|| rahaa-o.

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Today it is springtime in my home.

I sing Your praises, O endless One, You who have no limit.

Spring is not only a season outside — it can bloom inside you.
The deeper layer

Spring comes to your own home, inside you, when you sing the praises of the One.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Aaj hamaarai garihi basant — today it is basant, spring, in my house. Basant is the season when the mustard fields of Punjab turn bright yellow and the trees put out new green leaves.

This spring is inside, and it comes with singing: gun gaa-ay prabh tumH bay-ant — I sing Your praises, endless One. Think of the way a room changes when someone starts to sing. Nothing in it moves, and yet everything feels new.

A Question to Sit With

What does spring feel like to you? Can you feel that same feeling inside on any day?
