O Nanak, the Lord blesses with glorious greatness, those who focus their consciousness on the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O Dear One, please bring me to join the Sangat.

Nanak says: the One gives glory and greatness to those who fix their mind on the Naam of the One.

The Sangat and a heart set on the Naam bring greatness.
The deeper layer

The Sangat and a mind fixed on the Naam are what hold you up.

This is the rahao, the pause line, the centre of the shabad, the part everything else leans on. It is a prayer.

Har jee-o satsangat maylaa-ay: Dear One, let me join the satsangat, the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

Think of how you play better on a good team. Good players lift you up without even trying.

The second line gives the reason. Naanak tis no day-ay vadi-aa-ee: Nanak says the One gives greatness to those jo raam naam chit laa-ay, who fix their chit, their mind, on the Naam.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who lift you toward your better self?
