Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Forever and ever, say the Naam of God.

Then the pains of growing old and of dying will not weigh on you, and up ahead, in the One's court, everything will come right.

Carry something steady, and the big fears grow smaller.
The deeper layer

Keep the Naam close all your life, and the big fears grow small.

This is the Rahao, the pause line at the centre of the shabad. Sadaa sadaa japee-ai parabh naam — forever and ever, say God's Name. Jaraa maraa kachh dookh na bi-aapai — jaraa is old age and maraa is dying; their pain does not take hold of you. Aagai dargeh pooran kaam — up ahead, in the One's court, everything comes right. Think of a night-light in a child's room. The dark is still there, and it no longer feels scary.

A Question to Sit With

What feels less scary when you know you are not facing it alone?
