Meditate on the cool water of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. Perfume yourself with the fragrant scent of the Lord, the sandalwood tree.

Joining the Society of the Saints, I have obtained the supreme status. I am just a castor-oil tree, made fragrant by their association. ||1||

In plain words

Keep the One in your thoughts, and it is like cool, clean water for a thirsty mind and a sweet scent that follows you all day.

Joining the Sangat, I reached the highest place. I was a plain little tree with no scent of my own, and growing beside the fragrant one made me sweet too.

*Grow beside the Sangat, and its fragrance becomes yours.*
The deeper layer

The Naam is cool water and sandalwood scent at once: refreshment and fragrance together. A plain, scentless tree is made fragrant only by growing near the sandalwood.

seetal jal (cool water) and chandan vaas (sandalwood scent) open the hymn. hirad palaas are the scentless castor-oil plant and flame-of-the-forest, made sweet by nearness to the sandalwood of the satsangat -- the Sangat -- people gathered together to remember the One. Grace here is received in the Sangat, not achieved alone.
