Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind is so thirsty for one clear glimpse of the One.

Nanak says: God, I come to Your shelter.

The heart's thirst for one clear glimpse of the One leads it into the One's shelter.
The deeper layer

The heart can feel a deep thirst to see the One.

Har darsan kee man pi-aas ghanayree — my mind is so thirsty for a sight of the One. Darsan means a clear glimpse, a real meeting.

This longing has a name, viraha, the ache of missing someone you love. Think of waiting at the airport for a grandparent you have not seen in years. You keep looking at the door. The ache here is hopeful like that. The thirst itself points to the One who will meet it.

Bhanat naanak saran parabh tayree — Nanak says, God, I come to Your shelter. The longing turns into trust. The seeker rests, safe, in the One's care.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a longing in you that nothing on a shelf could satisfy? What do you think it is for?
