Pain and Peace

ਦੂਖੁ ਤਦੇ ਜਦਿ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਏ ॥
dookh taday jad veesrai sukh parabh chit aa-ay.
Pain comes, when one forgets Him. Peace comes when one remembers God.
ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਆਨੰਦੁ ਏਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
santan kai aanand ayhu nit har gun gaa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
This is the way the Saints are in bliss - they continually sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Pain comes when I forget the One. Peace comes when the One comes to mind.

This is the joy of the saints: every day they sing the praises of the One.

Peace comes back the moment you turn your attention back.
The deeper layer

Pain comes when we forget the One, and peace comes back when we remember.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Dookh taday jad veesrai: pain comes when we forget the One. Sukh parabh chit aa-ay: peace comes when the One comes back to mind.

The second line tells where the joy of good people comes from: nit har gun gaa-ay, they keep singing the One's goodness. Think of a favorite song you hum on the walk to school. It is not a chore. The humming itself makes the walk lighter. The singing is the very source of the joy.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good you can turn your mind toward when you feel low?
