The Passing Show

ਪੇਖਤ ਲੀਲਾ ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪ ਚਲਨੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਇਆ ॥
paykhat leelaa rang roop chalnai din aa-i-aa.
While he gazes upon beautiful dramas and plays, the day of his departure dawns.
ਸੁਪਨੇ ਕਾ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
supnay kaa supnaa bha-i-aa sang chali-aa kamaa-i-aa. ||3||
The dream becomes the dream, and his actions do not go along with him. ||3||

In plain words

While we are busy gazing at the bright, beautiful shows around us, the day to move on quietly arrives.

What felt so solid turns out to be a dream within a dream, and only what we have lived and given travels on with us.

What you live and give is what lasts.
The deeper layer

Life is a show that does not last.

Paykhat leelaa rang roop: we watch the colorful plays and shapes of the world. And while we watch, chalnai din aa-i-aa, the day to move on arrives. This is said gently, to wake us up, not to scare us.

Supnay kaa supnaa means a dream within a dream. Think of a movie you get completely lost in. Then the lights come on, and you walk out. Only one thing comes with us: sang chali-aa kamaa-i-aa, what we truly did and gave. Our deeds come along; the rest stays behind.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you have done that you think will still matter years from now?
