The slanderers rot in their slander; they are seized by the Messenger of Death. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

In mercy, the One has kept the One's own servants safe.

Those who speak ill of others wear themselves out with their own ill will.

Ill will thrown at a steady heart mostly just tires itself out.
The deeper layer

The One's mercy keeps the One's own safe. Kar kirpaa prabh aapnee apnay daas rakh lee-ay — in His mercy, God has kept His servants safe.

This is the "Rahao" line, the pause, the center of the shabad. Then: nindak nindaa kar pachay — the slanderers wear themselves out with their own slander. A nindak is someone who speaks badly of others behind their back. The main point is a comfort: ill will burns itself out.

It is like someone shouting mean words into a strong wind. The wind carries the words away, and only the shouter ends up tired. The one held in the One's care stays safe.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you stay steady when someone is unkind about you?
