There is an old story the loving ones tell, passed down through their songs.
In it, every cruelty finally falls apart on its own, while the humble and kind are lifted up and honored.
Cruelty falls apart, and the humble are honored — an old story with a clear ending. Kathaa puraatan i-o sunee bhagtan kee baanee — I have heard this old story in the devotees' songs. Baanee means sacred words, the songs of those who love the One.
The story says sagal dusat khand khand kee-ay — all the wicked are broken into pieces. It means cruelty cannot last. It falls apart on its own, like a sandcastle when the tide comes in.
Then: jan lee-ay maanee — the humble servants are given honor. The kind and humble are lifted up, while cruelty crumbles. The devotees' songs have remembered this for a very long time.
Can you think of a story where kindness outlasted cruelty?
