The Savior Lord has saved me; He has blessed me with His Kind Mercy. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I worshipped the perfect Guru, and all my pain is gone.

The One who protects has kept me safe, out of the One's own kindness.

You are kept safe by kindness, not by what you earned.
The deeper layer

The One who protects keeps you safe, out of plain kindness.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the centre the whole shabad turns around.

Gur pooraa aaraadhi-aa: I turned fully to the perfect Guru. Saglaa dukh ga-i-aa: all my pain lifted.

The second line says who did it. Raakhanhaarai raakhi-aa: the Protector protected me. Apnee kar ma-i-aa: out of His own kindness. Ma-i-aa means mercy, freely given. Think of a friend who shares lunch with you just because they care, not because you earned it. That is how the One keeps us.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone been kind to you for no reason at all?
