Verse 2 of 3

Awake, and Out of Reach

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਜਪੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦ ਜਾਗੈ ॥
raam naam jo jan japai an-din sad jaagai.
That humble being who chants the Lord's Name, remains always awake and aware, night and day.
ਤੰਤੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਨਹ ਜੋਹਈ ਤਿਤੁ ਚਾਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tant mant nah joh-ee tit chaakh na laagai. ||1|| rahaa-o.
He is not affected by charms and spells, nor is he harmed by the evil eye. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever chants the Naam stays awake and aware, day and night.

No charm or spell can touch them, and no evil eye can harm them.

An awake heart gives fear and superstition nothing to hold.
The deeper layer

Keep the Naam, and you stay awake inside, out of reach of every spell.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the centre the whole shabad turns around.

Raam naam jo jan japai: whoever keeps the Name. An-din sad jaagai: stays awake and aware, day and night.

The second line is about fears people had in old times. Tant mant nah joh-ee: charms and spells cannot touch that person. Tit chaakh na laagai: the evil eye cannot harm them. The evil eye is the old fear that a jealous look can hurt you. Think of rain on a raincoat. It just slides off. A heart full of the Name gives superstition nothing to grip.

A Question to Sit With

What keeps you clear-headed when others get spooked?
