Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Protector kept me safe and cleared away every trouble that weighed on me.

Nanak says: kindness came, and God became my help and support.

Every trouble can be cleared by the One who keeps you.
The deeper layer

The Protector keeps you safe and clears away every trouble.

Raakh lee-ay tin rakhanhaar means the Protector has kept me safe. Rakhanhaar means the One who protects. Sabh bi-aadh mitaa-ee means every sickness and trouble is wiped away. Bi-aadh means illness or suffering.

Kaho naanak kirpaa bha-ee means Nanak says kindness has come. Kirpaa means grace, loving kindness. Prabh bha-ay sahaa-ee means the One has become my helper.

Think of falling off your bike and someone you trust running over to help you up. The scrape still stings, but you are not alone anymore. This shabad ends in thanks: the One came to help.

A Question to Sit With
