Surrendering to the Will of God, I attain peace, and the darkness of doubt is dispelled. ||1||

In plain words

Rubbing out my self-importance, I entered the shelter — this is what the true teacher taught.

Surrendering to the One's will, I find peace, and the darkness of doubt lifts.

You can't really take shelter while still defending how important you are — but the moment you set that down, the fog of worry lifts.
The deeper layer

The mechanism of peace is spelled out: erase haumai (self-conceit, the separate self), enter sanctuary, surrender to the will — and doubt's darkness lifts. Each step depends on the one before. You cannot really take shelter while still defending your self-importance; the ego and the sanctuary can't both be in charge. And surrender here is not collapse — it is the specific act of aligning with Hukam, the way existence actually flows. When you stop insisting the river run your direction and let it carry you, the anxious dark of "what if" gives way to the light of "it is held."

A Question to Sit With

What's one way that protecting your pride actually keeps you from feeling at peace?
