A Restless Mind Steadies by Fastening to One Beloved Thing

ਅਟਲ ਅਛੇਦ ਅਭੇਦ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਆਉ ॥
atal achhayd abhayd su-aamee saran taa kee aa-o.
The Lord Master is immovable, immortal and inscrutable; seek His Sanctuary.
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਅਰਾਧਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਏਕ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਉ ॥੩॥
charan kamal araaDh hirdai ayk si-o liv laa-o. ||3||
Worship in adoration the lotus feet of the Lord in your heart, and center your consciousness lovingly on Him alone. ||3||

In plain words

The Master is unmoving, undying, past all fathoming; take shelter there.

Adore the One's lotus feet in your heart, and rest your whole attention lovingly on the One alone.

A restless mind is steadied not by force but by fastening to one unshakeable, beloved thing — stillness is caught from what you hold.
The deeper layer

A restless mind grows steady by holding on to something that doesn't move.

atal achhayd abhayd su-aamee — the Master is unmoving, undying, beyond knowing. The last verse spoke of a mind tossed by craving and anger. Here the cure is to hold on to what stays still. saran taa kee aa-o — take shelter there.

ayk si-o liv laa-o — fix your attention lovingly on the One alone. This is not strain. It is love. Think of holding a handrail on a bumpy bus. You don't force yourself still. The rail keeps you steady. Stillness is caught from what you hold.

A Question to Sit With

When your mind is tossed about, what is the steadiest thing you could fasten your attention to?
