You've Joined a Dance Already in Progress

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਖਿ ਕਰਮੀ ਨਾਚੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਗਿਆਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
sur nar virat pakh karmee naachay mun jan gi-aan beechaaree.
The angels, mortals, renunciates, ritualists, silent sages and beings of spiritual wisdom dance.
siDh saaDhik liv laagee naachay jin gurmukh buDh veechaaree. ||4||
The Siddhas and seekers, lovingly focused on the Lord, dance, as do the Gurmukhs, whose minds dwell in reflective meditation. ||4||

In plain words

The angels dance, and so do people. Those who give up the world dance. Those who keep the rituals dance.

The silent sages and the wise dance too.

The accomplished ones and the seekers, lovingly fixed on the One, dance.

And so do those who face the teaching, whose minds rest in reflection.

You're not dancing alone — you've joined a dance already in progress across all of creation.
The deeper layer

Everyone is already dancing, and you have joined in.

The verse opens the dance to everyone. Angels dance. People dance. Those who give up the world, those who keep rituals, silent sages and wise thinkers all dance. The siDh, spiritual masters, dance. Seekers dance. And the gurmukh, the one facing the Guru, dances too.

The shabad is widening here. It began with one heart dancing. Now all of life is a dance, and every kind of being is a dancer. The same love that moves one heart moves the whole crowd of beings. Think of a stadium doing the wave. You stand up, and you find the wave was already rolling around the whole place. You are not dancing alone. You have joined a dance already going on across all creation.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change how you feel about your small efforts to know they're part of a vast, shared movement?
