A Radiant Face

kaho naanak gur keenee ma-i-aa.
Says Nanak, the Guru has been Kind to me;
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥
halat palat mukh oojal bha-i-aa. ||4||1||
here and hereafter, my face is radiant. ||4||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak says: the Guru has been kind to me.

Here and in the world beyond, my face shines bright.

Kindness received leaves a brightness on the face that shows everywhere.
The deeper layer

The Guru's kindness leaves your face bright, here and beyond.

Halat palat: here and hereafter. Mukh oojal: a bright, unashamed face, the face of someone with nothing to hide. Ma-i-aa is the Guru's kindness, freely given. Guru Arjan often closes this way, with a glad face that shines wherever you go.

A Question to Sit With

When has kindness left you glowing so much that others could see it?
